HBOT - A Viable Option For Treating Various Health Issues

HBOT or Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a medical procedure that uses pure oxygen that is greater than that of an atmospheric pressure to cure or improve conditions. A pressurized chamber is used to provide pure oxygen, delivering ten to fifteen times more quantity of oxygen compared to normal atmospheric levels. HBOT's intentional effects include new blood vessel growth, deactivation of toxins, inflammation and swelling decrease; increase a body's capability in fighting infections, improve a body's healing rate and help in clearing out metabolic waste products and toxins from the body.

Initially for years, HBOTs were mainly used to treat decompression sickness. But as tests improved and with the onset of positive results, more and more doctors find this medical procedure useful in treating other conditions. These conditions include non-healing wounds, various infections, carbon monoxide poisoning, near-drowning, nerve and brain disorders such as Bells palsy, near asphyxiation, treat any damage resulting from radiation treatments, disorders of one's digestive system and cardiovascular disorders. Today, HBOTs are generally recommended as a complement to conventional treatments and therapies.

Various conditions which HBOTs can effectively treat The following conditions have experienced beneficial effects through the use of HBOT procedure. There are of course more medical conditions which can be treated by this procedure, but the list below should give one an idea on its effectiveness.

(1) Stroke - this usually causes paralysis, speech and thought impairment and even spending the rest of one's life in a wheelchair. Through HBOT, improvement rate of over 40%-100% out of 1,000 cases were reported in the US since the 1970s.

(2) Cerebral palsy - this afflicts children having undergone brain trauma at birth. The HBOT can effectively treat its underlying problem, resulting to rapid gains in its impact to a child's cognitive skills over time.

(3) Multiple sclerosis (MS) - an incapacitating nervous system disease which results in inflammation patches in a person's spinal cord and brain which eventually scar. Out of several known MS treatments, the HBOT procedure is considered as the safest, effective and cost-effective.

(4) Traumatic brain injury (TBI) - this result in disabilities related to TBI. These injuries causes brain trauma or dead or dormant brain cells due to lack of oxygen. Through HBOT, these cells can still be revived.

(5) Sports-related injuries and other types of wounds - HBOT can help in significantly increasing a person's rate of recovery, particularly torn muscles and sprains. It also helps in healing wounds such as burns, fractures, plastic surgery, bone damage caused by radiation exposure, etc.

The HBOT medical procedure is non-invasive, very cost effective, and safe and works well with other medical treatments. But before you decide on going for this type of treatment, it is a good idea to be familiar about its possible risks and side-effects first. Considered as a safe treatment, it has minimal risks with barotrauma to one's sinuses and ears resulting from pressure changes as its most common side-effect. Autoinflationary techniques to clear the ears are always taught to patients before undergoing this procedure. Any side-effects are usually resolved once the treatment is completed.
