How Effective Are MRI Scans?
Since the early 1980s, the magnetic resonance imaging or MRI scan has been used to further assist in getting clearer medical imaging. This type of imaging used to be commonly referred to as a magnetic resonance tomography or MRT. Later on, as technologies advanced, the use of MRI scans became more in demand especially in the medical field. How does MRI scan work?

These atoms send out its own radio waves which the scanner picks up, turning it into a picture from which more detailed analysis is gleaned. As a non-invasive method, MRI scans are usually conducted as an outpatient medical procedure. Patients are required to lie still while being scanned, and because it is essential to be completely still, an anaesthetic may sometimes be used. Any jewelry or any metal objects must not be worn during the procedure as it exposes a patient to a powerful magnetic field. MRI scans have no known side effects or dangers, though there is a theoretical risk to pregnant women in their first 12 weeks. The examination is also not painful as one cannot feel it, and the procedure may be repeated several times without any problem. The only downside to this treatment is the machine's banging noise in the duration of the procedure. MRI scans are very effective in examining abnormalities in the brain and spinal cord, as this technique provides clear pictures of the body, especially body parts that are surrounded by bone tissue. Its very detailed pictures provide the best procedure in discovering tumors in the brain. These tumors can either be benign or malignant, and if a tumor is found, the MRI scan can also check if it has spread into other brain tissue. This method also enables an analysis to focus on other details of the brain. These details may include seeing abnormal brain tissue normally occurring in people with multiple sclerosis or find out if the brain tissue has suffered from lack of oxygen after a stroke. MRI scans help detect heart defects as large blood vessels in the heart's surrounding tissue are also shown. Moreover, this method is effective in examining spine, joints and soft body parts such as the spleen, kidneys and liver. Through MRI scans, taking pictures from almost any angle makes it very effective in getting accurate diagnosis.
